The Rise of Femicide and Gender-Based Violence in Latin America

The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is dedicated to promoting gender equality and empowering women worldwide. One of the most pressing human rights crises in Latin America is the alarming rise in femicide and gender-based violence (GBV). Despite legal reforms and international efforts, thousands of women and girls continue to face violence, discrimination, and death due to deeply rooted cultural norms, weak judicial systems, and systemic gender inequality. This committee will analyze the causes of femicide, assess the effectiveness of existing policies, and propose solutions to enhance protection, justice, and prevention efforts.

Femicide—the intentional killing of women and girls because of their gender—has reached crisis levels in several Latin American countries. According to UN Women, the region has some of the highest femicide rates in the world, with countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, El Salvador, and Honduras recording alarming numbers of gender-related killings. Many of these crimes go unpunished due to corruption, lack of law enforcement, and victim-blaming attitudes within the justice system.
